History Of The Electron

Pre-history: Electromagnetism.

Work in contributions from James Clerk Maxwell, also consider Richard Feynman/P.A.M. Dirac's QED contributions, which help give us the field theoretic picture of the relativistic nature of the wave nature of the electron.

Maxwell's contributions relate to electrons by explaining their behavior in tandem with atomic nuclei by introducing photons as the carrier of the force responsible to their behavior, which is necessary because electrons have charge, and notably, photons do not, and thus are not subject to the force that they mediate between particles.

When was the electron discovered?

It was discovered by J.J Thomson, at Cavendish, in the late 1800’s, partially via the use of the cathode.

What is an Electron?

An electron is a sub-fundamental particle, of the lepton family.

Outline relationship between electron ejection of photons, and photons being carriers of the electromagnetic force.
